My name is Agness Mumba, I am 24 years old, and I live in Fixon village. I am a beneficiary of the REPSSI intervention project. Before joining the Self Help Group (SHG), I faced financial challenges and often struggled to find peace within myself. However, when we started the SHG, we began saving money, taking out loans, and using the funds to buy household necessities and invest in businesses.
I learned about the saving group from Esther, a community-based volunteer. When we attended a meeting to hear about their plans, they proposed a savings program. They explained that as the money accumulated, we could start offering loans and eventually reap the benefits. As our savings grew, we began taking out loans. From January to July, I saved K470. Initially, I borrowed K270 to purchase airtime, which I sold to repay the loan. Later, I borrowed K1000 to buy chitenge materials, which I sent to the village for sale, making a profit of K500.
Since joining the saving group, I’ve noticed positive changes at home. I can now find money on my own and assist my husband when he lacks funds for mealie meal or our children’s school fees. This has brought me peace. With the income from my business, I buy household goods, repay my loans, and reinvest the remaining money. In addition to financial support, the SHG also teaches us how to live harmoniously with our children. We are encouraged not to isolate ourselves but to stay connected with friends, sharing our problems. This helps prevent thoughts of self-harm, which can arise when one feels alone. When stressed, I talk to my husband, as unresolved issues can also affect our children.
The SHG has significantly improved my life, allowing me to achieve many things independently and live a happy life. We faced a challenge in the SHG where some members wanted to take out loans on the same day they repaid their previous loans. We discussed this issue with Madam Esther and agreed that members should wait and give others a chance before taking another loan.
I hope we continue saving and repaying our loans on time, as this will grow our funds and benefit everyone involved. Before the SHG, we struggled to find money, so we are grateful for this group. It has provided us with loans and taught us responsibility, helping us in various ways. Thank you.
