From Stress to Strength: Zawadi Masika's Journey of Overcoming Challenges and Empowerment through REPSSI's Support

My name is Zawadi Masika, I’m 23 years old, living in Shiyala. I am a caregiver in the REPSSI intervention program.

Before joining the program, I struggled with stress about finding washing paste and food for my child. When I met REPSSI, they taught me how to care for my child and manage my stress without overthinking, which could lead to harmful thoughts.

I heard about the Happy Mother, Healthy Baby project from our mentor, who taught us how to overcome stress. Overthinking can lead to dangerous thoughts, especially when a father denies responsibility for the baby.

My parents noticed a positive change in my behavior. I started washing, feeding, and caring for my child with love, care, and protection, and now I have peace of mind.

I faced significant challenges when I got pregnant. My baby’s father threatened not to marry me and refused to take responsibility for the pregnancy. I almost committed suicide, but REPSSI advised me on how to handle stress and reassured me that, even if the father didn’t accept the child, my parents would support me.

I’ve seen many changes since joining the program. I now love and protect my child, and I feel good about myself. Initially, I wondered how I could care for my child at such a young age, but REPSSI taught me how to care for both my child and myself.

When I face challenges, I seek help from my mentor, family, and church. If I kept my struggles to myself, I would feel overwhelmed, but sharing helps me feel better. I encourage young mothers who haven’t joined this program to do so. It teaches them how to care for themselves and their children and manage stress. They learn not to hurt their babies and how to ensure their well-being. Through this program, I plan to return to school so that I can provide for my child and ensure he gets a good education and grows up with good behavior. When I finish school, I’ll work to support and feed him well.
