My name is Gloria Nkwenka Sheleni, and I run a scrap metal business. I am also a member of the Self Help Group. Before I joined the Self Help Group, finding money was a significant challenge. Life was tough, but after I started participating in the savings program, things began to improve.
I learned about the adolescent young mothers group through Madam Finet. She explained that we would be saving money to achieve financial independence. I saw the value in this program and decided to give it a try. Since then, my financial situation has improved significantly.
I saved K1,500, and during the sharing out, I received K2,000. As we approach the rainy season, I plan to invest some of this money in a cooperative to buy fertilizer. I also want to start a chicken business and continue buying and selling scrap metals. This diversification will help me manage household expenses and contribute to the Self Help Group. The scrap metal business has become slower because more people have entered the market. To address this, I want to expand my ventures by selling chickens and fish. Relying on a single business can be risky if it slows down. With the money I received, I bought a goat to keep as a reserve. If we face financial difficulties, I can sell the goat to cover our needs. This way, I don’t have to worry excessively because I know I have a backup plan. The Self Help Group program has also helped me manage stress. Before, I used to experience headaches and high blood pressure due to financial worries. Now, with the support from the group, I can start businesses and find the money we need, which significantly reduces stress.
At home, there is no longer stress related to money. Our children are healthier and happier because we are not constantly worried about finances. My husband and I work together to manage our home more efficiently.Being part of this group has allowed me to access loans and start businesses, reducing our challenges and lowering stress levels. The Self Help Group has truly made a difference in our lives.
