Transforming Communities Through the Happy Mother, Healthy Baby Project

Leonard Chakufyali, a REPSSI focal point for the Happy Mother, Healthy Baby project, has witnessed significant transformations in communities like Rufunsa and Chimusanya. Before the project, these communities struggled with mental health issues such as stress, depression, anxiety, and fear, particularly among young mothers grappling with caregiving responsibilities. Leonard shared that the young mothers are now more open about their challenges, which has positively impacted their well-being and that of their children.

“The REPSSI approach to mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for early childhood development (ECD) is unique,” Leonard explained. “By prioritizing the well-being of the caregiver, we ensure better care for the children under their care.” Leonard also highlighted the Self Help Group support as a vital addition to the intervention. This economic support has strengthened the program by addressing poverty among young caregivers, who now benefit not only from the lessons but also from improved financial stability.

Expressing his gratitude, Leonard said, “I appreciate REPSSI for this intervention. It has a lasting impact on the beneficiaries, providing them with the skills and support needed to thrive.”
