Transforming Lives Through the Happy Mother, Healthy Baby Project

Killian Kalenda, a dedicated mentor with REPSSI’s Happy Mother, Healthy Baby project, has become a pivotal figure in transforming the mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of adolescent young mothers and their children. His journey with the project has not only enriched his professional life but also brought significant positive changes to his personal life and community.

“Through this project, I’ve gained essential knowledge and skills in mental health and psychosocial support,” Killian shares. These skills have enabled him to effectively address the challenges that adolescent young mothers face and mobilize families and communities to provide a supportive environment. The training sessions and practical experiences have equipped Killian to be a catalyst for change.

One of the most impactful conversations for Killian has been “Me and My Relationships.” He recalls, “This session helped me build a strong, healthy relationship with my wife and children. I’ve learned how to handle myself better and how to interact positively with others.” These skills have significantly improved his relationships, not only within his family but also in the broader community. Killian’s influence has extended beyond his home, leading to remarkable changes within his community. “I’ve seen young mothers begin to make positive decisions and contribute meaningfully to society,” he notes. These young mothers, once overwhelmed by the responsibilities of early parenthood, are now capable of taking care of themselves and their children, thanks to the support and education they received through the project.

Killian highlights a primary mental health challenge: “Adolescent young mothers often face the premature responsibility of raising children. These young couples are typically unprepared for the psychological and practical demands of parenthood.” His mentorship focuses on equipping these young mothers with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate these challenges, ensuring better outcomes for themselves and their children.

The impact of Killian’s work is evident in the improved wellbeing of the young mothers and their families. “They now enjoy healthier relationships, make better decisions, and are more engaged in their communities,” Killian proudly states. His efforts have created a ripple effect, fostering a community where young mothers feel supported and empowered to thrive.
